Walk up Tonbridge High Street and you pass a Tudor inn behind a brick front, the castle above the Medway and the Gothic buildings of Tonbridge School, with Victorian terraces and 20th century estates beyond. As a family-run business with more than two decades behind us in Kent and the South East, we are builders who work on houses of every one of those ages.
On roofing, we laid a slate roof and a warm insulated felt flat roof on a new build in the town. In a kitchen, most of the trades are ours, including plumbing, heating, electrics and plastering, and long-standing subcontractors fill any gaps. Expect to see the owner on site during each week of your build, alongside the same team that measured up and quoted. Free site surveys and written quotations come first, with design plans if you want them.
Our Services
In and around Tonbridge we take on house extensions, bathrooms, groundworks and garden landscaping, work for our painters and decorators, and larger jobs such as new homes, barn conversions and commercial buildings. The full list is below.
The old town stood on the north bank of the Medway, the side less prone to flooding, and in the 13th century the castle gained a three storey sandstone gatehouse. The Tonbridge Conservation Area was first designated in 1969, and Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council updated its boundary in 2008. It runs from the river north to Yardley Park Road. The council's appraisal notes that large parts of the old town show mid 18th century fronts over 16th and 17th century structures, as brick made from good local clay took over from timber as the main building material.
After the railway arrived in 1842, small terraces went up on the low land to the south and larger houses on the higher ground to the north and east. The Slade is a Victorian neighbourhood of terraced and semi-detached houses, and Dry Hill Park has substantial late 19th century homes in large plots. Metropolitan Green Belt covers the west of the borough, and parts of the High Weald National Landscape lie in the south around Tonbridge. Hadlow, Golden Green, Shipbourne, Hildenborough and Leigh are all on our patch.
Recent Work
On a new build project in Tonbridge we laid a slate tiled roof and a warm insulated, high performance felt flat roof. At Shipbourne, between Tonbridge and Sevenoaks, a listed property needed renovation across the main house, garage and annexe, and we also worked on its brick and flint garden boundary walls. In Tunbridge Wells we built a loft conversion with two new double bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom, and our decorators then carried out the internal decoration throughout it. We have also carried out bathroom work in Matfield.
Out at Ightham we built a terrace and swimming pool surround in sandstone paving, with a painted render retaining wall, gabion retaining walls, garden steps with recessed LED lights, 300mm of new topsoil and a Medallion turf lawn. At Paddock Wood, our work has included groundworks for a set of industrial units.
Below are four jobs from Tonbridge, Shipbourne, Tunbridge Wells and Matfield, with a link through to the complete set of photos for each.
