Cranbrook is a town of white weatherboard, hung tiles and old oak frames, and building work here goes better when the builders understand those materials. That matters most in the centre, where so many buildings are listed. As a family-run firm we have been building in Kent and the wider South East for more than two decades. In and around the town we fit new kitchens, repair and renew roofs, and build house extensions for families who want more room without losing the character of the house.
The owner visits your job every week, and nobody new turns up to build what someone else quoted. If the roof needs attention as well as the kitchen, it can go into the same job, so there is no second firm of roofers to chase. Site surveys and written quotes are free, optional design plans can follow, and every enquiry is answered inside two working days.
A single Cranbrook job can need several trades, such as kitchens and bathrooms together, or a barn conversion that starts with groundworks. The same team runs every service below, and design and planning stays in-house.
Our Services
Cranbrook grew rich on the Wealden cloth trade, which local tradition traces to Flemish weavers who settled here in the 14th century, and that wealth still shows in its buildings. Several 15th and 16th century cloth halls and hall houses survive on the High Street, timber framed and later faced in weatherboard or hung tiles. In this part of the Weald, weatherboard on houses was usually painted white, while farm buildings were often just tarred. The Grade I listed Union Mill, built in 1814, rises above the rooftops as one of the tallest smock mills in the country, and most buildings on the High Street and Stone Street are listed.
Planning here is decided by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council. The town centre is a conservation area, Sissinghurst has its own, and the town and much of the land around it lie in the High Weald National Landscape. For owners that usually means period restoration done like for like, with timber cladding and clay tile hanging matched to the original, not swapped for modern boards. We work across the parish, including Sissinghurst, Hartley, Colliers Green, Swattenden and Wilsley Green, and out to Benenden, Hawkhurst, Goudhurst and Frittenden.
In Cranbrook itself our painters and decorators redecorated the inside of a Victorian house, on a job that also took in a new kitchen and dining area, a utility room and new gym rooms. We have carried out groundworks in the town too. At Benenden we built a warm insulated flat roof, finished in GRP fibreglass with two contemporary glass rooflights, over a new rear single storey living room extension.
The landscaping at a manor house in Hawkhurst brought a honed sandstone terrace with bullnose steps and a glass balustrade, resin bound paths, and a block paved driveway with granite setts and brick gate piers. We also built an oak framed entrance porch there on a brick dwarf wall, and new GRP roofs with a roof lantern. Elsewhere we have built an extension at Sissinghurst and a new build annexe at Frittenden.
