Many of Tenterden's older houses are timber-framed, weatherboarded or faced in brick tiles, and they need builders who will repair them with care rather than cover them up. Heritage Crest Build is a family-run company with over two decades of building across Kent and the South East, and around Tenterden much of our work has been on period homes, roofs and outside joinery.
Our roofers have re-tiled the great hall roof of a Grade I listed property at Wittersham, using reclaimed Kent peg tiles at the verges, ridge and valleys. Indoors, we fit kitchens and bathrooms with our own plumbers, electricians and plasterers doing the work behind them. The owner comes to site at some point every week, and you keep a single point of contact until the last coat of paint is dry. The same people who quote the job are the people who turn up to do it.
Our Services
Kitchens, bathrooms, roofing and house extensions sit beside larger projects such as new homes and barn conversions. Every service below comes with one point of contact, and our design staff can produce drawings, planning applications and listed building consent applications for any of them.
Tenterden grew rich on medieval wool and cloth. The old town grew up along a ridge, with the High Street running along its top. The 15th century tower of St Mildred's Church looks over a High Street that opens out at its western end into a broad, tree-lined street. The town's buildings include medieval timber-framed houses, Georgian fronts in brick tiles and weatherboarding, and Victorian stucco shops. The heart of the town is the Tenterden Conservation Area, centred on its medieval street pattern, and many High Street buildings are listed. In the 15th century the hamlet of Smallhythe was a busy shipbuilding port.
Planning decisions here are made by Ashford Borough Council, with Tenterden Town Council commenting on applications. Much of the countryside west and south of the town lies in the High Weald National Landscape. St Michaels, Smallhythe, Reading Street and Leigh Green sit within the parish, with Rolvenden, High Halden, Woodchurch and Wittersham, on the Isle of Oxney, close by. On houses of this age, good period restoration matches what is already there: the same timber, the same tile, the same mortar.
Recent Work
Many of our jobs near Tenterden are in Wittersham. On a new build there we laid a handmade clay tile roof with dormers, a conservation rooflight and cast iron deep-flow gutters. A semi-detached cottage in the village was refurbished throughout with new wiring, heating, plastering, oak floors, a new kitchen, new bathrooms and bi-fold doors. At a manor house our groundworks team built reclaimed terrace walls and entrance steps, and we laid a gravel driveway edged in granite setts with a porcelain patio.
In Tenterden itself, a family home was damaged when a vehicle hit it. We put in temporary structural support, replaced the load-bearing front wall up to first-floor joist level and rebuilt the WC and hallway behind it. On an annexe in the town we prepared the joinery and redecorated the exterior in Dulux Weathershield. At High Halden we repointed a chimney, renewed its lead flashings and soakers, and fitted new gutters and downpipes.
Two of these jobs are in Tenterden itself, an annexe and a driveway, shown beside a new build at Wittersham and a barn at Woodchurch.
